Mothers

Mothers

What a blessing!   As I look back at what my mother did for me and what Mandy is doing for our children, I am amazed and so very grateful for this wonderful blessing God put in our life though his grand design!  Hour after hour of selfless service, sitting up at night to hold them when they are sick, all the meals cooked with love, loads and loads and loads of never ending laundry, ferrying kids to practice, helping with homework, being our biggest fan… and the list goes on and on!  Now I’m not saying that fathers are lazy, but there is no substitute for momma!

For years and years I took my mom for granted, I expected her to love me and serve me because… after all… it is her job, right?  What a joke!  Since then I have seen firsthand how being a good mother is a choice and a sacrifice!  When we marry we look at the kind of person they are, and we value things like independence and free spirits.  We raise our daughters to be strong and to find their ultimate fulfillment in God, but then take them for granted when they choose to give up their individual freedoms to raise the rug rats!   To see how many mothers are willing to set aside their good night’s sleep, their freedom of travel, their freedom from dependants and some even their careers for a period of time so that they can invest in our children… it truly blows my mind!  Especially with how little appreciation we show.  As I look back now, I see my mother’s sacrifices and I am so thankful for how she worked to help shape me (despite my lack of gratitude) into the person I am today!

As I look at how God describes himself, I see a lot of things that talk about his power and Lordship.  I also see qualities such as his beauty, grace, tenderness, mercy, caring and patience… and those qualities are things that I don’t have to look long at all to find them exhibited in my mother, my wife and so many women of this congregation.  Of course we aren’t perfect, but my prayer for us this week is that we all take note of the godly qualities we see and have seen in our mothers – and take the time to thank the Lord for them, thank them for all the things they have sacrificed for us as they modeled the attributes of God before us.  Let’s hold these great women of faith up as examples for our daughters so that they have the right kinds of role models to aspire to!
Mothers are a blessing, so let’s treat them that way!

Striving alongside you for the prize,
