“Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it” Hebrews 2:1 ESV
One of the songs that E likes to listen to is “Colonel Hathi’s Elephant March”, “Hup two three four. Keep it up two three four!” from the Jungle Book. The elephants are on patrol looking out for danger in the jungle. The elephants stop marching and line up. Colonel Hathi walks down the line inspecting everything from posture to how clean their trunks are. One of the elephants has a dirty trunk and the Colonel reminds him to keep it clean because it might save his life someday. It seems like a little detail but it could have bigger implications in the future.
When I think about what is happening it reminds me of this verse in Hebrews. “We must pay closer attention to what we have heard… lest we drift away from it” I like how the ESV words this but I really like the power behind the way the NLT phrases it. “So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.” Hebrews 2:1 NLT. It reminds us of what we are listening to which is the TRUTH!
Hebrews 2:1 is an important reminder to us in our walk with Christ. We need to listen carefully to the truth as we hear it. We need to pay attention to all of the details. Details are important and can change the outcome of what we are reading or doing. If you leave out an important ingredient in a dessert (like the one you may have made for pot luck today!) then it won’t turn out as it was supposed to and might even be ruined all together. This is the same as we approach scripture. It is important for us to pay attention to everything that the Word is saying to us. All of the details are there for a reason… even the ones we don’t like to see. The details that hit close to our hearts and cause us to think. It might require action from us or a change that can impact a big part of our lives. We need to pay closer attention to the details of the Word and what it is trying to tell us.
But the verse doesn’t end there. Verse 1 ends with, “lest we drift away from it.” Ouch. When we don’t use the truth or listen to its details then it becomes easy to drift away from it. Sometimes it is a fast drift but it can also be a slow drift that eventually puts us way out in the ocean before we notice a change. We need to pay attention to the details so that we stay near to the truth. We hear the things we need to do and then we apply it to our lives. We make the changes so that we don’t drift off course and end up lost in the woods instead of the top of the mountain observing the beauty of the surroundings.
Are you paying attention to the details? What are they telling you? Do the details of the Word tell you that you need to make an adjustment in your life? Even when we don’t like to pay attention to detail we need to listen to the details of the Word. You never know when the details will save you. “Hup two three four. Keep it up two three four!
